The sugar paste is made from sugar, lemon juice, guar gum and water. It is applied lukewarm, at about body temperature, and is meant to grip the hair rather than the skin. The salon presses the paste against the direction of growth and then pulls it with the grain. It describes sugaring as more effective, more sanitary and less painful than other methods, and says the paste does not stick to skin the way wax can.

A visit begins with a consultation about what the client needs. Clients undress at least partway, and some services call for a bikini or Speedo. The salon recommends letting hair grow for about twelve to fourteen days before most appointments, and aftercare instructions and soothing products are reviewed after each session.
