Shapes Beauty Bar Next Door

Shapes Beauty Bar opened at 1530 U St. NW in December 2019 and is owned and run by its founder, Chyna. The salon describes its visits as more than a typical appointment and says it aims to give satisfactory customer service.

A second location, Shapes Next Door, opened in September 2020 at 1522 U St. NW on the bottom floor, a few doors down from the main salon. It is also a full-service spa.

The menu is broad. Hair services include blowouts, silk presses, color, highlights, relaxers, sew-ins, wigs, ponytails, twists and braids. Lash, nail and brow services are also offered, along with facials, massage and body contouring. The salon also lists makeup, teeth whitening, fibroblast treatments, facial fillers, body fillers, Juvederm and Restylane lip fillers, vaginal steams and waxing. A four-hour BodyContouring group class is offered, as is an Exclusive BodyContouring Training Course listed at $950.

Cancellations and reschedules need 48 hours notice. A second cancellation or reschedule within one calendar year is charged 50% of the scheduled services, and no-shows are charged 50%, rising to 100% for a second no-show or cancellation. Appointments can be secured with a card on file. Services are non-refundable, but if the provider makes a mistake, a corrective service is offered free of charge. Clients have 48 hours to raise a concern, and corrective services are not offered five days after the original service. Body contouring services are non-refundable. Clients arriving more than 15 minutes late may have their appointment moved. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and the salon describes itself as family friendly.

According to founder Chyna, the salon pairs beauty services with support for self-esteem and women's health, delivered in a therapeutic way. It says it takes pride in satisfactory customer service.
