About

Shag the Salon is a hair salon in San Antonio. The salon aims for styles that suit each client's personality, anywhere from mainstream looks to more extreme ones. According to the salon, San Antonio Current voted it the city's best hair salon for two years, and the salon describes its stylists as among the best in San Antonio.

A visit starts with an in-depth consultation, where a stylist learns what the client wants in the cut, color and style. Appointments are not rushed. Stylists look at reference pictures and talk through how the client styles their hair day to day, then suggest options. They also go over the pros and cons of color and technique choices and look for a solution that fits the client's budget and lifestyle. The mood is casual, with music playing so clients can relax.

The salon says the whole stylist team works with color correction and has more than 50 years of combined color experience, and that the team has dozens of years of experience overall. Color is done with an Italian color line.

The salon is known for YUKO Japanese thermal straightening, which it has offered for over 12 years and says it has performed hundreds of times. The treatment takes three to four hours and costs $500 to $700. The salon says the YUKO system also repairs and regenerates hair. Touch-ups are recommended every four to six months, depending on hair texture and growth rate. Hair can be washed two days after treatment and should be blow dried after each shampoo. Coloring is not advised within two weeks before or after the treatment, and YUKO is not recommended on relaxed, Brazilian or keratin-treated hair, except for new growth, where a three to four month wait is advised. Home care products for YUKO-treated hair are also available.

Dreadlocks are another specialty. Consultations for dreadlocks are free, and appointments can last up to six hours depending on hair length and the number of dreads. Dreadlock services start at $500.

Stylists begin with a detailed consultation and base recommendations on how each client actually wears their hair day to day, rather than rushing the appointment.

A casual room with music, where clients can settle in and relax.
