Salon Central OTR opened in 2009, when the Over-The-Rhine area had many parking lots and few nearby businesses. It first operated as Jim Brofft Salon Central and was later renamed. The salon is located in the landmark American Building. It describes itself as a longtime fixture in the neighborhood, and as demand grew it added stylists and extended its hours.

The salon aims to enhance each client's own style rather than push one look. Its clientele has included professionals in the arts, business, politics, philanthropy and law. Prices cannot be confirmed by phone, so clients are asked to raise any concerns with their stylist before a service begins.

Services include haircuts, chemical services such as highlights, perms and keratin straightening, combo packages that pair a cut or retouch with color, highlights or a blowout, and waxing for brows, lip and chin. A Silk Press may add $90 or more. Product charges may apply for extra thick hair and extra foils, and services running over three hours may be billed hourly. A fee of 50% of the booked services applies to no-call, no-show or late cancelled appointments.

The salon is an exclusive Aveda salon. It runs an assistant program that promotes from within, and the whole staff is sent to hair-industry conferences in cities including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. For parking, the Kroger lot at Walnut and Central Parkway is free with a grocery purchase of $15 or more, though it charges a flat $5 on weekday evenings and Saturdays. Metered on-street spaces allow up to two hours, and the Cincy EZPark app can add time.

The salon works to fit each client's personal style rather than impose a fixed look, and uses Aveda products throughout.
