SALON

Salon is located at 224 Roebling St. in South Williamsburg and describes itself as an intimate space. It calls itself a community center and incubator for beauty workers and clients, and presents itself as a creative studio at the crossing of hair and culture. Its founder, Rubi Aguilar Jones, is a hairdresser who has worked in New York, Paris and Los Angeles.

Hair services are booked by appointment only. The salon has three styling chairs and two dryer chairs, and says all hair is welcome. Stylists have experience across every hair texture, and the team includes specialists in curls and waves, blonde and double-process color, dry cutting and low-maintenance air-dry styles.

The salon's Study library is a public library devoted to hair archives and research, which the salon describes as the first and only public library of its kind. Alongside it, a studio supports artists who work with hair as a medium and produces in-house publications, and Imprenta publishes posters, pamphlets and guides focused on care work. CARE initiatives cover fundraising, volunteering and education for salon workers. Events are shaped by conversations with clients in the chair and visitors to the library.

Hair Shop sells hair products and hair gifts with a focus on sustainability, for local pickup in Brooklyn only. The salon space is also available for rental. The home page lists press mentions including Vogue, Professional Beauty Association and Mother Tongue Magazine.

The salon's core values are care, study and practice, and it treats its hairdressers as caregivers within a shared community space where clients and workers learn and collaborate in person.
