Proper Salon for Men opened in January 2019 in a room under 100 square feet. In October 2020 it moved into its current suite inside The Landmark, the former Comal Power Plant, which was built in 1925 as a hydroelectric power plant. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and holds Texas Historic Landmark designation.
The salon is devoted entirely to men's grooming. Its owner had spent about seven years working and managing several men's salons before opening her own, and the business was set up to give men a better grooming experience than she had seen across the industry. Services go beyond the haircut: a visit can include a consultation, a shave, a massage, and a finish with styling.
The Proper Treatment is the most extensive haircut service, with a consultation, detailed cut, neck shave, scalp and face massage, hand and arm massage, conditioning rinse and style. Completely Proper pairs a haircut with a straight razor shave, beard line-up and facial massage. Proper à la Carte offers the relaxing parts of The Proper Treatment without the haircut, followed by a blow dry and style. Hours are Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM.
The salon concentrates on men's grooming alone, with services that cover hair, shaving, facial care and hand care in one visit.
