The school traces its history to Mims Classic Beauty College, founded in 1932 by Neil Mims in Port Arthur, Texas. It moved to San Antonio in 1962, and was later rebranded as the William Edge Institute and relocated to New Braunfels. The school describes itself as the oldest cosmetology school in Texas and says it has spent around 30 years reshaping the beauty education it offers. Locally, the company runs two William Edge Aveda Lifestyle salons alongside the training salon and the school.
Three full-time programs are offered. Cosmetology is 1,000 clock hours, can be finished in as few as 7 months or may take up to 12, and is stated to meet Texas requirements for a licensed cosmetologist; it includes 334 hours of haircutting and styling and 133 hours each of hair coloring and cold waving. Manicuring is 600 clock hours, covering 320 hours of manicure, pedicure and artificial nail work, including sculptured nails, nail wraps, soft and hard gels and nail art. Esthetics is 750 clock hours, with 225 hours of facial treatment, cleansing, masking and therapy, 90 hours of anatomy and physiology, and 75 hours each of makeup and electricity and machines. Classes run Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and start throughout the year. Students work through a digital curriculum and mini boards given at set hour intervals that mirror TDLR exams, preparing them for the Texas state license tests.
Visiting the student salon means booking a service that a student performs under an educator's eye. Consultations with a student are complimentary. Appointments are recommended and can be made online or by phone at 830-387-4094. Guests should plan extra time, because an educator checks each step and services take longer as a result. Aveda retail products are sold at the front of the salon.
Students can access financial aid, including federal grants and scholarships, and in-house payment plans are available. Career support includes resume help, interview preparation, a student job board, introductions to salons, career fairs held through the year and an alumni network that receives event, continuing education and career assistance. The school states it cannot promise or guarantee employment to any graduate.
The curriculum centers on creating looks and on running a business. The school does not open its clinic floor every day, a choice it says keeps students learning through graduation.
