Pink Grapefruit Creative Studio operates from the historic Artblok Complex in Northeast Minneapolis, near the Mid City Industrial, Como and Southeast neighborhoods. Independent stylists work from the space, and the studio concentrates on curly hair and low-effort styling, with cuts meant to suit natural hair and everyday life.
To find the studio, clients enter the gated east lot from 21st Ave SE, park near the Roger Beck Florist sign and use the front door of building #5. The studio sits at the far east end of the building, toward Highway 280, rather than the main entrance. A ramp leads to the entrance, but the automatic door is not working, so clients who need help getting in are asked to say so when booking. The dryers are Dyson models measuring 79 decibels, and silent services can be arranged with a note in the booking.
A new client haircut starts with a consultation of about 30 minutes. Most cuts are done dry on natural hair, with wet cutting offered when it suits the hair better, and each curl is cut individually. The wash includes a clarifying and mineral chelating treatment, steam, a hair mask and a scalp massage. On a first visit the styling lesson and drying can take 30 to 45 minutes, covering air drying, partial or full diffusing, and products for the client's hair type. Afterward clients receive a note of recommended products and a styling tip sheet, and the studio checks in one week later to see how the cut is working out.
Before a dry cut, clients should wash with their usual cleanser and conditioner, apply a light layer of their usual products, skip aerosol hairspray and sticky or waxy stylers, and leave their curls alone, arriving with hair down and curly rather than tucked, clipped or heat-styled. Wavy and curly clients are asked to avoid day-two hair, and tight curly clients should come with a wash-and-go less than three days old. Express haircut clients must arrive with freshly washed and styled hair. Changes and cancellations need 48 hours' notice, with a $35 fee for haircut appointments cancelled inside that window and a $50 fee for color and spa services. The studio has no front desk and does not take phone calls, so questions should be emailed at least 72 hours ahead. Sales and services are final, and gratuity is not expected.
Clients can buy the recommended products the stylists carry, or order them for in-store pickup, and gift cards are available. The brands carried are plant-based, mostly vegan, free of artificial colorants, and free of synthetic fragrances and unnecessary additives. Packaging is aluminum, glass or 100% post-consumer recycled material, and the studio says it recovers up to 95% of its salon waste through a TerraCycle recycling partnership. Hair color is chemical-based rather than henna, offered in ammonia-free, low-ammonia and traditional formulas, and color services are for existing color clients only.
The studio plans cuts around each client's natural hair and daily routine, mostly dry, and sends every client home with a styling lesson and products suited to their hair type.
The studio describes its space as lush, cozy and vibrant, and one client found it calm, low-noise and nicely put together.
