Orange Salon was founded in 2012 in South Austin by Heather Barclay, who set it up as a teaching platform that has trained curl specialists. Later the salon moved to a smaller space with a smaller staff, concentrating on higher-level curl education and certifications.

The salon describes itself as Austin's premier curl team and says it is known for extensive experience with curly hair, color and hair health. It reports more than 30 years of combined experience across the team, over 10,000 training hours and more than 1,000 clients. The salon has been featured in Curl Magazine and states it was named to the magazine's Expert Stylist Panel in 2021.

Clients are asked to arrive with their best curls. Buns, braids and ponytails are not allowed on the day of a cut. The salon offers a satisfaction guarantee and asks clients to text any concerns so they can be scheduled promptly.

Curly cuts are done dry, in the hair's natural state, with the spring of the curl taken into account. Clients are often photographed so curl changes can be followed over time.
