Next Man Up Spa was founded by Marva Cooksey to give Black men and first responders a space to focus on themselves. The spa's mission is to help men put their wellness and self-care first in a setting designed for them, with services and an environment shaped around men's grooming and wellness needs.

About

The spa is at 946 E. 43rd St. in Bronzeville, with free street parking and a bike rack. It is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Thursday from 3 to 9 PM, Friday from noon to 9 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from noon to 5 PM, and it is closed on Mondays and the first Sunday of each month. It serves clients across Chicago, with named areas including Hyde Park, Chatham, Beverly, the South Loop and West Loop.

The menu is broad. Massage is the largest group, with deep tissue, sports, clinical, relaxation, lymphatic and recovery options, from 10-minute hand work to 90-minute full-body sessions. Facials range from a 75-dollar express facial to a 175-dollar masculine and mature facial, and a cub facial is offered for teens and pre-teens. Beard treatments run from a beard oil treatment to a premium in-grown treatment, and there are haircuts, shaves, kids' cuts and loc services, along with manicures, pedicures and combined packages.

Accessibility is addressed directly. The spa has an ADA-compliant hydraulic table for massage for wheelchair users, offers a wheelchair pedicure that can be given in a private room on request, and provides diabetic-safe pedicures that do not involve cutting. A soothing haircut uses quiet clippers, quiet trimmers and earplugs for autistic or sound-sensitive young men.

The spa runs an in-house bar with a chosen range of spirits, including brands that are Black-owned. Under city ordinance, no alcohol is served or drunk during massage sessions. According to the spa, it is Black-owned and woman-owned. It also describes itself as a provider of corporate wellness and on-site chair massage for companies, universities, healthcare organizations and community institutions. The spa says Time Out Chicago, the Chicago Bulls and iHeartMedia have recognized it.

Gift cards can be used for massage, grooming, facials, wellness packages and other services. The spa lists HSA, FSA and VA CCN among payment or discount options. Clinical massage paid with HSA, FSA or HRA funds may need a prescription or letter of medical necessity, and the spa can help with that. Post-surgical lymphatic drainage may require medical clearance first, and prenatal massage is offered to women in their third trimester with healthcare provider approval.
