Vannessa Houlihan opened Maven in 2016 and still works behind the chair as a stylist and owner. The salon was designed to feel approachable and a little luxurious, with a relaxed mood and professional service. It sits in the downtown area just outside the center of Franklin, with public spots out front, spots at nearby gas stations and a small lot beside the building when it is not blocking cars. The salon is open Tuesday through Thursday 9 AM to 8 PM, Friday 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM, closed Mondays, and open Sundays by appointment only.

About

The approach starts with conversation. Stylists listen closely, prepare for each appointment and offer guidance based on a guest's features, hair and routine. Guests can also be matched with a stylist, so the salon helps pair them with someone suited to the look they want. Services and pricing are based on the hair and the desired result, not on a guest's gender or age.

New guest visits are longer and include an in-depth Maven Consultation. A new guest haircut also includes a luxury shampoo, a mini treatment and a finished style, and a new guest color session includes a first-time consultation, a blow-dry style, a tone or gloss with shadow root, a mini treatment and a take-home gift. Future visits after a first appointment are priced at maintenance rates. Color services include a standard amount of color, measured with a tool called Vish, and additional color charges may apply for longer or thicker hair. The time and price range for color depends on which stylist a guest books with.

Custom work covers major transformations, corrections of earlier color, and bold or fashion shades, and every one of these begins with a consultation before a visit can be booked. Sessions are generally priced by the hour at the start, and several appointments may be needed to reach the goal. Fixing previous color usually calls for a face-to-face meeting first, and the process can include trial strips of hair, pre-treatment steps, and preparation to do at home. Fashion shades start with lightening the hair, and that lightening can be applied from the roots to the ends, as balayage, as color blocking, to the tips only, or as money pieces. Transformations to grey or white hair work to either merge natural grey or white strands with existing color or allow them to grow out.

The salon runs a Maven In Training program, which it treats as central to the business. Stylists come through the Maven In Training Program or the Maven Bootcamp, and each stylist has a personal page showing their work, pricing and social media. Policies cover timing: the salon asks for at least 48 hours notice to cancel, reschedule or shorten an appointment, and changes made within 48 hours carry a 30 percent rebooking fee. Guests should contact the salon within 7 days if a cut or color differs from the consultation, and adjustments are made at no extra charge.

Work starts with real conversation and a plan, with stylist matchmaking and hair shaped to each guest's features, daily life and goals.
