About

MASA.KANAI opened in January 2018, founded by Tommy Masanori, who brought nearly two decades of work as a top stylist at salons in Osaka, Tokyo and the United States. The salon describes its style as high-end with a Japanese flair, and says it aims for the highest level of hospitality and service.

Haircuts begin with a consultation about the look a client wants and what suits their features. From there the stylist works through a set order: a shampoo, a wet cut to set length and shape, a standing cut for longer hair, a blow dry, a dry cut for texture and layers, and then styling.

The cutting tools are custom specialty scissors handcrafted by partners in Japan and imported directly to the salon. The range includes curved scissors for thinning and texturizing, stroke scissors with one sharp and one blunt blade, and thinning scissors that remove about 14 percent of hair per snip, below the usual 20 to 40 percent. The salon uses high-speed steel scissors, which it calls the world's sharpest, and says its specialty scissors are patented.

The salon has two locations: 570 Columbus Avenue, and a suite inside the Ansonia Hotel at 2109 Broadway. Treatments include Deep Conditioning Zero, Olaplex, Milbon Premium Gold Line, Infrared Iron Rebuilding, which uses infrared technology for damaged hair, SmoothFiller, a Wella treatment described as a vegan alternative to keratin, and Head Spa, a scalp and hair treatment with aromatherapy and massage that can be booked with the founder or a trained specialist. Detangle Care uses scissors designed to detangle and straighten hair at the root without cutting strands, and is best done on clean hair at least once a month.

Walk-ins are welcome when space is available, and appointments can be made by email or phone. A credit card is required to reserve, and a deposit may be asked for Head Spa, highlights and balayage. Cancellations or changes within 24 hours of the appointment carry a fee of 50 percent of the service, and missed appointments carry the full service price. Guests are asked to arrive at least 10 minutes early. Gratuity is requested in cash only.

The salon runs its own in-house classes, taught by Tommy, on its signature haircutting process. An Assistant Program for people new to hair work meets one to three times a week, and recruit training covers shampoo and massage, conditioning, blow outs and styling, cuts of all kinds, and color theory and application. Candidates can apply by emailing a resume and portfolio to info@masa-kanai.com.

Each haircut begins with a consultation and follows a set sequence, built around custom specialty scissors that the salon imports from Japan.
