Locks by Alaina works out of a single suite at Sola Salons in Grand Rapids. The work centers on curly and wavy hair, and the owner, Alaina, is the stylist who does the appointments.

Visits are built around a dry cut, since curls take shape differently wet and dry. Each cut is shaped to the client's curl pattern, density and texture. A typical appointment includes a consultation, a hair detox, a scalp massage, deep conditioning, an optional hot towel with a choice of essential oil, styling and a final run-through.

The menu is grouped under Curly Hair and Waxing. Curly Hair ranges from a one-hour trim and a separate one-hour style to a full cut-and-style for returning guests, with a longer welcome visit for new guests that includes a style coaching session and a complimentary gift bag. Waxing is a quick 15-minute service for eyebrows, lip or chin using a soft wax suited to sensitive skin. All prices are flat and include gratuity.

Beyond appointments, the salon sells an ebook guide to curly hair care called Untangled Basics, which includes video tutorials, product recommendations and tracker worksheets. Hair accessories are sold through The Curly Closet on the salon website.
