Kensho Esthetics was started on the idea that most people need someone who listens to their skin, not more products or harsher treatments. The name is a Japanese word for seeing one's true nature, which reflects the studio's focus on what each client's skin actually needs.

Each appointment opens with a conversation about the client's skin, goals, current routine and sensitivities. Treatments are customized from there, and the studio says it avoids upselling and avoids recommending long multi-step routines, suggesting only what will help the skin.

The menu covers a 30-minute skin consultation, a range of facials from a quick lunchtime treatment to a one-hour facial with full-face massage and extractions when needed, skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and a chemical peel, back care, and waxing for much of the body and face. A teen facial includes teaching skin care habits.

The studio is in a historic building and is calm and quiet, with one client at a time. It is open Tuesday from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 pm and Thursday from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, and is closed Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Cancellations or reschedules need at least 24 hours' notice. Short-notice cancellations may be charged 50% of the scheduled service price, and an appointment counts as a no-show 15 minutes after its start time, with the same 50% charge. Late arrivals do not extend the appointment, and services are completed in the remaining time where possible. Confirmations and reminders go to the cell phone number given at booking. The studio also sells a small selection of skin care products and offers gift cards.

Treatments are customized after a conversation about each client's skin and goals, and the studio suggests only what it believes will help the skin rather than long routines.
