It was set up with the aim of improving working conditions for hairstylists: changing the view that technical hairstyling is lesser work, treating it as a skilled trade, and improving pay and conditions for the people who do it.
Both locations are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 7 PM, and closed on Mondays. The San Gabriel salon is at 120 N San Gabriel Blvd #E. The Costa Mesa salon is at 891 Baker St in Baker Street Village, near Mitsuwa and South Coast Plaza, with parking in the shopping center.
Appointments can be booked online through Fresha or by phone at either location. Consultations and haircuts can be done in Chinese, and some stylists also speak English, so it helps to mention English when booking. Prices are set by an in-store board, and where a listing shows two figures, the second is for junior stylists. A women's cut with shampoo is $85 to $95 with a senior stylist and $65 with a junior stylist, and a men's cut with shampoo is $65 with a senior stylist and $45 with a junior stylist. The salon suggests a tip of 15% to 22% of the bill. Wedding and editorial styling is quoted individually.
The sister brand, 好剪才髮物所, makes its own shampoo and hair care, including the Formosa line and treatments for the scalp and hair. The salon also runs a training school, 好剪才訓練所, which offers hairstylist courses such as a collarbone-length layered cut, a Korean one-length cut and a QQ dog-hair curl. The salon offers free hair-model recruitment for these courses, with priority to partner school student associations, along with apprenticeships, campus visits and free haircuts for people in need.
Membership cards come in tiers from Entry to Black. Members are offered rewards over the year after a one-time top-up. A two-person offer gives 20% off cut, color and treatment services when two people book together. Students at partner schools get 10% off services and products with a valid student ID, and scalp and hair treatments are half price for them; only current students qualify. According to Fresha listings, limited products are offered at 50% off.
Each cut begins with a consultation using the salon's own method, the Five Key Elements of Cutting, which takes head shape, face shape, hair nature, mood and texture into account before cutting. Before a service, stylists also note head shape, face shape, hair color, skin type and the client's styling needs.
