Her grandchildren, founders Marcia Rhodes-Tyler and Nikita Rhodes Montgomery, set up the Old Town salon to carry on her warmth and her hair work.

The loft-style space uses emerald accents, live plants and classic furniture, and its design draws on the founders' grandmother's home state and home. The salon describes itself as an urban oasis with a tropical, soothing feel. A platform area hosts industry classes and events, and a boutique sells stationery, candles and similar goods from local makers and small business owners across the country, along with a wider range of retail products.

Hair services cover cuts, color and texture work. Curly hair has its own menu: a Dry Curly Cut is done on pre-set, detangled hair, a Curly Cut with Styling includes a cleanse, cut and styling with products chosen for the curl type, and Curl Therapy combines a detox, a bond builder treatment, styling and a curly cut, recommended for new and existing curly clients. Color options range from gloss and highlights to double process and all-over color, and color correction is priced per hour with an emailed description of your current color and goal needed first. A Silk Press is a thermal straightening service. Nail services include a signature manicure with cuticle care and light massage, a gel manicure, and a signature pedicure with exfoliation and heel care, with gel polish available as an add-on. Body waxing takes place in a private room with the resident esthetician.

Bridal hair and makeup are offered for parties of any size. Bridal hair rates are set for each event and generally start at $175 per hour, with a four-hour minimum for one stylist. Bridal makeup is priced per person and varies between airbrush, standard and touch-up options. Inquiries go through a bridal questionnaire and are answered as soon as possible.

Sunday and Monday are by appointment only, Tuesday through Thursday hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Prices shown at booking are base prices that can rise with hair length, density and additional chemicals, and the salon discusses and confirms any extra fees before service. Reservations require a credit card that is charged only if the guest does not show. Changes made at least 48 hours ahead carry no penalty, while later changes or no-shows are charged the full service price. A $50 consultation is required for some services and is deducted from the service cost if booked the same day. Children must be 12 or older, and pets are not allowed unless they are part of a service. Metered street parking is nearby, a paid lot is about two blocks away on St. Asaph and Cameron streets, and some free parking is on Queen Street.

The salon aims for services guests want to recommend, products that suit every hair texture, and stylists who can deliver both. It also aims to keep the work environment low-stress so stylists can focus on what they do well.
