Haven Hair Studio

Haven Hair Studio is the Livermore practice of Michelle Spinks, working out of Pepper Salon at 291 S. Livermore Ave. The work centers on cutting wavy and curly hair, and the studio presents itself as a place to learn about natural texture and celebrate it. The business states that hair shaming is not allowed.

New guests start with a longer first visit of about two hours. It opens with an in-depth consultation, a detox and scalp treatment, a cleanse and condition, and a scalp massage, then moves to a custom cut, done dry or wet depending on what the consultation calls for. The visit closes with a lesson on applying products and drying hair to reach the finish you want.

Existing clients choose between two cuts. A maintenance cut suits minor changes in length, shape, or weight when the last cut was three months ago or less. A transformation cut suits a major change in length, shape, or weight, a very different look, or a last haircut more than three months back. Both include a consultation, a signature shampoo bowl experience, and a custom cut; the transformation cut also ends with a mini tutorial for styling at home. Bang trims and bang plus face-framing trims cover pieces the stylist cut before, are done dry, and do not include a wash.

Haircut appointments can be booked online, with a waitlist when no spots are open. Color appointments are requested by email, with a reply within 48 hours. Hours are Tuesday and Thursday 9am to 2pm and Friday noon to 7pm. Clients should reschedule or cancel at least 48 hours ahead, since a missed appointment without notice is charged the full service price. Debit cards, credit cards, and cash are accepted, and tipping is welcome but not expected.

Clients are asked to arrive with clean, air-dried hair and little or no styling product, and to avoid heavy butters, creams, silicones, and oils beforehand. Hoodies, collars, and turtlenecks are asked to stay at home. A small selection of complimentary drinks and snacks is provided, and clients may bring their own. Companions are welcome, though very young children who cannot look after themselves are discouraged. Parking is a designated lot out back plus street parking. Before and after photos may be taken for social media and client files, and clients can raise concerns about this.

Education about natural texture and celebrating it are central to the work, and judging anyone's hair has no place in the practice.
