The salon's timeline traces its roots to founder Sonia Peterson, who trained at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis in 1984 and later traveled to Jamaica and the UK to learn hair techniques. She developed Pinch Braids, a method of braiding hair in for length and securing it with string, and invented the Dread Perm, a quick way to start dreadlocks on all hair types. She opened a salon in Los Angeles in 1999 and died in 2004. The timeline also dates the Spread the Dread Tour to 1997.

Co-owners Kellie O'Rourke and Wendy Stachowicz refined the salon's methods for human hair extensions and synthetic dreads. The salon states it has more than 30 years of experience with hair extensions, and describes its cutters as some of the most creative in Minneapolis.

Stylists begin by listening to what clients want and work with them toward the result, whether that is a full set of rainbow extensions or a classic bob. Services are priced by the job, with several starting prices listed on the site, and the salon offers free consultations to help clients choose an extension method or dreadlock approach.
