Hair By Laurese started out as a braiding practice. Its owner, Laurese Swanson, took on her first braiding client two years after she began braiding, and her salon work came even earlier, as an intern and receptionist at 16. She relocated to Los Angeles at 25, and the businesses she has worked at since include Comoprof, The Hair Shop, Dream Girls salon and The Hair Pin House of DTLA.

Every style includes shampoo, conditioner and a steam treatment. Braiding hair is bought separately and is not part of the braiding service price. For braiding, the stylist prefers pre-stretched hair from specific brands and recommends human hair for boho braids. Styles priced over $200 include a trim.

The focus is on the health, growth and length retention of clients' hair, and the salon will not do styles that would compromise it. Clients ages 10 to 16 get $30 off styles priced over $200 and $10 off other styles.

Retail items sold at the salon include a hair growth oil, a silk bonnet and a silk hair scrunchie.

Uses salon-grade products matched to each client's hair needs, along with strengthening and moisturizing treatments.
