Franklin traces its history to 1915, when Madame N.A. Franklin began teaching cosmetology in San Antonio. The school later opened its first locations in Houston and Dallas, and operated under the name Franklin Beauty School before adopting the name Franklin Institute.
Ownership of the school has changed hands several times across the decades. In 1934 a Chicago business passed to Abby and J.H. Jemison, and in 1935 the Houston school was bought. Ronald Jemison Sr., together with his wife Glenda, took over as school owners in 1969. According to the school, it has been operating for over 100 years.
The school's stated mission is to build the skills of barbers and hairstylists across Texas. Training pairs classroom instruction with hands-on practice, and the school says it gives students real-world experience. It also offers a Build A Business program covering how to run a business in barbering and hairstyling.
The school describes itself as the leading barber and beauty college in Texas and says it produces more industry-ready barbers and cosmetologists than others. It also describes its facilities as state-of-the-art; these are the school's own claims.
Programs are offered at three locations: 6521 Hwy 6 N in Houston (Northwest), 13318 Almeda Rd in Houston (Southwest), and 8030 FM1765 in Texas City.
Training combines classroom instruction with hands-on practice, and the school includes entrepreneurship in its curriculum through its Build A Business program.
