About

Evan the Colorist is a personal hair color business in Chicago, set up inside Vandross Hair Design in Bucktown. Evan Sollars is the colorist, and the work is built around individual color rather than a fixed menu. Each appointment opens with a conversation about goals, tones and how much upkeep the client wants, and the color is finished with a gloss and blow-dry.

The hair painting technique is the signature. Color is painted directly onto the hair in sections, without foils or a set pattern, so highlights sit around the cut and the texture. Compared with traditional foil highlights, which look more uniform, this approach grows out more softly. The brightness is gentle, and reaching an all-over light blonde can take at least two sessions.

Prices are starting points. The final cost depends on hair length, density and goals, and is confirmed at consultation, where a more precise estimate is given. Every regular service includes consultation time. A standalone consultation is $25, non-refundable, and can be credited to a later service. A corrective consultation is $50 and includes a strand test, with photos of results and options emailed within 24 hours. A free 15-minute virtual consultation by FaceTime or Zoom is offered, especially for double processes, color corrections and large changes.

Visits are by appointment only, with no walk-ins. Online booking opens up to 75 days ahead, and clients can message to request times outside the posted hours. Hours are Sunday 10 to 6, Monday and Tuesday 11 to 7, Wednesday 10 to 3, and Saturday 10 to 6 on alternating weeks, with Thursday and Friday closed. Haircuts and a stand-alone blow-dry are not offered; outside stylists are recommended for cuts, and blow-dries are part of color services.

Corrective color and services scheduled longer than three hours need a 50% deposit by credit card. Deposits are non-refundable for cancellations or no-shows but can be applied to one session rebooked within a month. Clients are asked for 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule, and late cancellations may incur a $50 fee. A missed appointment may incur a fee of half the scheduled service, added to the next booking. Gratuities are not included and can be paid by card, cash or Business Venmo. A complimentary adjustment for the same service can be booked within a week of the original appointment; refunds are not issued for color services.

Color is chosen around each client's complexion, features and personal style, after listening to what they want. The color is hand-painted to be easy to live with, and a gloss is recommended every two to three months between full refreshes.
