Epoch started in 2010 as a two-chair side business in a corner of co-owner Ben Mahoney's film production studio. Beth Schindler developed the salon concept after meeting Ben in 2011, and the salon began expanding and bringing on staff in 2012. Beth Schindler developed the salon concept after meeting Ben in 2011, and the salon began expanding and bringing on staff in 2012. It now operates from North Avenue with a team of stylists and associates.

The salon's core values are doing the right thing, integrity, embracing change, continuing education, supporting one another, and keeping a positive outlook. The salon describes itself as inclusive and welcoming to all people, and says it is one of the most successful salons in Wicker Park.

Services fall into cuts and styling, color and dimension, treatments and specialties, and extension options. Several color services, including babylights, Foilyage, Vivid Color, Corrective Color and Platinum Card work, require a free consultation before pricing. Listed prices are starting points, and the final price can rise with hair length, thickness and the amount of product needed. The salon works on a commission basis.

Changes or cancellations made at least 48 hours ahead avoid a fee. A cancellation within 48 hours costs $50, one within 24 hours costs half the service total, and a no-call, no-show costs the full total. Fees are charged to the card on file, and this policy took effect December 15, 2024. Clients more than 20 minutes late may need to reschedule or have services adjusted. Tips can be paid by cash, credit card, Venmo or Zelle.

Street and metered parking are available nearby. The Damen Blue Line stop is two blocks west, and the 72 bus stops at Wolcott. Rideshare users should enter 1849 N. Ave, not 1147 W. Ohio.

The salon's stated philosophy centers on great hair, great service and authentic relationships with clients. It is a certified sustainable green salon and works with Greencircle Salons on waste diversion.
