About

Elevate Salon Institute, known as ESI Michigan, operates two campuses. The Royal Oak campus is on Crooks Road on the north side of the city, between 13 Mile and 14 Mile Roads. The Utica campus is on Utica Park Place Boulevard. The school describes itself as a premier cosmetology and beauty school in Michigan and says it is part of a nationwide network of more than 30 beauty schools. Each campus is independently owned and operated and sets its own pricing, program offerings and business policies. The school states it is licensed and regulated by the State of Michigan, and both campuses are NACCAS-accredited.

The main programs are a 1,500-clock-hour Cosmetology Certificate covering hair, skin and makeup, a 750-hour Esthetics Program focused on skin care, facials and advanced skin treatments, a 600-hour Instructor Training Program for those who want to become certified beauty educators, and a Limited Specialty Instructor program, which is 300 hours and trains students to teach nail technology. Cosmetology training covers haircutting and styling, color and chemical services, skin basics, nail care, salon business management, marketing including social media, and state board preparation. The school reports an 11 to 1 student-to-instructor ratio in cosmetology, and its training uses L'Oréal Professionnel products and techniques under a partnership with that company.

Each campus has a student salon where students work on real guests. Every service is performed by a student under the supervision of a licensed professional. A student haircut includes a consultation and hair analysis, shampoo and conditioner, the cut with instructor sign-off, and a quick blow-dry, and typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Cuts are offered for all hair types and lengths, including curly cuts shaped dry. Color work begins with a written formula that a licensed instructor approves before mixing, and the formula is kept in the guest file. Guests who have never had professional color or who have a history of sensitivity are asked to take a patch test 48 hours before color. Balayage is hand-painted and highlights are foiled, with appointments typically running 3 to 4 hours. Facials are performed by supervised esthetics students and typically run 60 to 75 minutes, covering skin analysis, cleansing, exfoliation, steam, massage, a finishing mask and SPF. Waxing takes place in private treatment rooms with an instructor on the floor throughout. Nail services are for natural nails only, and acrylics and full sets are not offered.

The Royal Oak campus has 50 styling stations, modern classrooms, a product retail center, free on-site parking and access to public transportation. Its hours are Monday to Thursday 9:00am to 9:00pm and Friday and Saturday 9:00am to 4:30pm. The Utica campus has 50 styling stations, a dedicated esthetics spa, a nail technology center and advanced training labs, and it is open Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 4:30pm. Services can be booked online or by calling 586-884-4687. Admissions calls go to 248-965-3352 for Royal Oak and 586-884-4686 for Utica.

Applicants must be at least 17, hold a high school diploma or GED, and provide a valid government-issued ID and a Social Security card. Admission requires a completed application and enrollment agreement. ESI Michigan is approved for federal student aid, and grant and loan eligibility is determined through the FAFSA. The school also offers flexible payment plans, scholarships for those who qualify, and career services such as resume and interview coaching and networking with local salons and spas. ESI does not guarantee employment or earnings. Completing a program is an educational milestone and does not by itself issue a cosmetologist or esthetician license, since graduates must also pass the state exams and meet application requirements. Current tuition, books, kit and fees depend on the exact schedule and campus and should be requested directly, because the published historical cost figures are not current prices. Cosmetology graduates pursue careers such as hair stylist, salon owner, color specialist, bridal stylist, platform artist and brand educator.

Students learn by doing supervised work on real guests, with licensed instructors checking each step. The school emphasizes accountability and professionalism.

Both campuses have 50 styling stations in a salon and spa setting, and the Utica campus adds a dedicated esthetics spa.
