Edo was founded in 1998 by Jayne Matthews and Chri Longstreet. The first salon opened in a vacant church in the Lower Haight district of San Francisco and had no sign, website, email or business cards, so clients found it by word of mouth. A second location opened in Oakland in 2019.
The two locations are light-filled and roomy, decorated with handmade pieces by local artists. The team aims to flatter each client's face and features, and the salon welcomes neurodivergent and non-binary clients of every age, gender, ethnic background and walk of life.
The haircut menu covers bangs, shags, pixies, mullets, French bobs, wolf cuts, bixies and barbering, and it works with curly and highly textured hair. Razor cutting is central to the work, and the salon says its stylists are personally vetted to master its razor technique. Stylists take part in continuing education on products and haircutting methods, and the salon runs haircutting and styling classes both online and in person.
Color uses eco-friendly, low-toxic formulas. Haircuts and barber services are priced by the hour according to the stylist's level of expertise. Hair color prices vary by client and hair type, so the salon asks clients to contact their stylist in advance for details.
Uses natural, eco-friendly and organic haircare products at both locations, and aims to frame each client's features with cuts shaped to them.
Bright, spacious rooms decorated with handmade work by local artists.
