Echo Salon Downtown Grand Rapids

Echo Salon was founded in 1999 by Mike Deem in the Heartside neighborhood of downtown Grand Rapids. Brandi Rinehart owned the salon from 2009 until 2017, when Melissa and Adam Looman bought it and rebranded it. The Creston location opened in fall 2025 in a historic former cafe building on Plainfield Avenue NE. A Lowell location operated from 2022 to 2025.

The salon describes its mission as bringing its hair work to people across the Greater Grand Rapids area. It says it treats every client with respect and aims to keep hair as healthy as possible through each service, and that its cuts, color and extensions are fully customized and damage-free. It also says it supports a Stylist Education Fund. Stylists are trained on the Bellami, Habit, The Luna Method, IBE, Platform, Halo and Aqua extension systems and attend regular trainings inside and outside the salon. The salon says each stylist holds different certifications.

Consultations are free and included in every service, so clients only need to book the service itself. Services are booked online through each location's booking page. Clients can also call or text either location, or email echosalongr@gmail.com, with questions before booking. Downtown hours are Monday through Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, closed Sunday. Creston is open Monday 4pm to 8pm, Tuesday through Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, closed Sunday. Downtown parking is metered on the street, free after 7pm and on weekends, with a paid lot on LaGrave one block south. Creston has a free lot off Quimby and Coit, and paid street parking through the MOTU app.

Every extension service starts with an in-person consultation to discuss color match, exact quote, care and installation scheduling. Extensions are not offered to anyone under 18. Hidden beaded weft and tape-in extensions need maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks, with full removal and reinstall. I-tip extensions need a move-up every 5 to 6 weeks, then a removal and reinstall every 5 to 6 weeks. K-tip extensions last 3 to 4 months and cannot be reused. Halo and clip-in extensions are custom color matched, ordered and blended to each client, and are removed daily so they do not stay in overnight. Tape-in wefts are 1.5 inches wide and attach to adhesive tape. The extension inquiry form lists first-appointment budget ranges of $400 to $600, $600 to $800, and $800 or more.

Bridal services include bridal hair and wedding party hair, with updos, half-up styles, blowouts, beach waves and other wedding looks. For 2028 weddings, bridal hair is a flat $280, including one hair trial and the day-of service, and wedding party hair is $120 per person; clip-in extensions for a wedding party carry an extra fee. Bridal bookings have a minimum of $500 or three people, and travel fees apply when the team goes to the client. Bridal services do not include makeup, and the salon does not book Sunday weddings. Annual wedding booking opens six months before the new year, and clients planning 2028 weddings are added to a contact list by email. Service prices depend on stylist experience, education and technical skill, and vary with hair length, texture and density. Haircut prices include shampoo and style.

Each stylist designs cuts around the client's style and preferences, and the salon tailors cuts, color and extensions to each client's vision. Stylists keep up with trends through education and focus on keeping hair healthy.

The Creston studio sits in a historic former cafe with industrial floors, exposed brick, tin ceilings, large windows and crown molding.
