David James operates two salons, one on Fillmore Street in San Francisco and one on B Street in San Rafael. The Marin location is open seven days a week, while the San Francisco location is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Appointment hours run from 8am to 6pm, and the front desk is staffed from 9am to 5pm. Clients can call or text 415-655-3973, request a booking by email at appointments@davidjamessalons.com with their name, preferred dates and times, and the service wanted, or book online through Fresha.

Cut prices start at $135 for women and $100 for men in San Francisco, and at $125 for women and $85 for men in Marin. Each haircut includes a shampoo, a scalp massage and finishing styling, and a blowout is booked as its own appointment, starting at $85 at both locations. Color and tint start at $200 in San Francisco and $150 in Marin. Partial highlights start at $300 and full highlights at $385 at both locations. Balayage starts at $395 in San Francisco and $350 in Marin, and toner or glaze starts at $95 in Marin. Bleach and tone is priced by consultation in San Francisco.

Balayage is hand-painted without foils, while highlights are foiled. Toner follows lightening to neutralize warm undertones. Color correction is available for adjusting or undoing an earlier result, including results from box dye or another salon. Consultations are complimentary, and prices may be adjusted based on the time, products and work a client's hair requires.

Extensions, weddings and events in San Francisco are scheduled and priced by email to info@davidjamessalons.com. In Marin, up-dos and bridal styling are priced by consultation. Clients with curly or textured hair are asked to mention it when booking so they can be matched with a suitable stylist. New clients provide a credit card to reserve appointments. Cancellations need 24 hours' notice for cuts and 48 hours for color services. Cancellations outside that policy may be charged 50% up to the full amount of the services booked, and arriving 15 minutes late may mean being turned away and charged the cancellation fee.

According to the salon, it has been recognized by San Francisco Magazine's Best of the Bay (July/August 2024), which listed it under Best Hair Stylists and Cuts; by Marin Magazine's Best of the County 2026, which included it among the Best Hair Salons in Marin; by Fresha, which named it Best in Class for 2023; and by Allure, which included it among the best haircuts from coast to coast in April 2015. The salon also offers free or low-cost services to models who give time for training and photos.
