About

Darby Fields opened in 2017 in Encinitas and is run by its owner, Darby Fields, who also works as the stylist. The salon describes its craft as art first and service second, with the goal of helping each guest feel more confident in a look that is shaped to them.

Services are grouped into custom color, dimensional foiling and tailored cuts. Color ranges from a quick single-process refresh and a gloss refresh with blowout, through root work and a full color service with a root retouch or melt, an all-over gloss, a deep conditioning treatment and blowout, to a consultation-based red transformation that takes several hours. Highlighting runs from a minimal face-framing and part treatment up to a full head of highlights and balayage. Prices are set in advance, and listed starting points run from $100 for a trim during a color visit up to $515 for the largest highlighting package.

Returning guests have access to the most options, since several color and highlight services are reserved for them, and the salon also welcomes new guests.

Practical details: there is a gated parking lot behind the building off Basil Street, street parking, and a public lot across the street. During appointments, guests can have drinks and snacks, charge their phones, and ask for a music change. Gratuity is not accepted. Cancellations made within two days of an appointment carry a $25 fee per hour reserved, though the fee is waived if the time can be filled, so guests are asked to text as soon as they know they may need to cancel. A 15-minute grace period applies to late arrivals, and cut appointments need clean, dry hair worn down without an updo.

The salon works with the gentlest formulations and lightens slowly, and treatment and client education are part of every visit. Haircuts are dry-cut to show natural texture and growth patterns, and the salon shares the science behind hair health and aftercare.
