Commune is co-owned by Chelsea Captan and Kristina Smith, who met as educators for Evo before becoming business partners. The salon sits in Suite 106 on Pacific Coast Highway and is open Sunday to Friday from 10am to 7pm and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. The salon describes itself as a safe space with a close, team-based feel, where client wellbeing comes first.
The salon lists its values as healthy hair, simplicity, honesty, innovation, care for the planet, and kindness. Those values show up in its sustainability work: Commune partners with Green Circle Salon and sends 95.5% of its salon waste to Canada to be processed and reused. A portion of every hair service price also goes toward diverting hair service waste from landfill.
A first visit starts with a waitlist form, which lets new clients ask for a consultation and be matched with a stylist. Existing clients can book directly with their own stylist through that stylist's page. While a stylist prepares, clients can wait on the couch in the front area, and still and sparkling water, beer and wine, coffee and tea are available on request. Prices vary by stylist, and some stylists price by the hour.
Each stylist works independently, so policies can differ slightly and clients should check with their stylist. Cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice are charged 50% of the service price, and a deposit may be required at booking. A missed appointment without a phone call is charged in full. Arriving 15 minutes late may add $25 to the service price, and arriving 30 minutes late means the appointment is rescheduled with a full charge. If a stylist runs late, they notify the client and offer a reschedule with no penalty.
Commune also sells hair care products in store and online, and products it does not stock can be ordered through affiliate links that support the salon. Clients who name their stylist at checkout for a product recommendation give that stylist commission. Refills are available in store only, and bottles need to be clean, dry and empty.
The salon's values centre on healthy hair, simplicity, honesty, sustainability and kindness, with a focus on conversation and a consultation before new clients are matched with a stylist.
