Good Folk began as a partnership between Alison and Cali, an esthetician, under the name GoodFolk Hair + Skin, and opened in 2016. After the pandemic the two owners chose to run their businesses separately. Cali opened Skin Trifecta, a skin spa in Sunset Beach, and Good Folk became a hair-only salon under Alison, who had worked for four years at a commission salon in Long Beach before opening Good Folk.

After the pandemic the two owners chose to run their businesses separately. Cali opened Skin Trifecta, a skin spa in Sunset Beach, and Good Folk became a hair-only salon under Alison, who had worked for four years at a commission salon in Long Beach before opening Good Folk.

The salon describes its mission as inspiring and cultivating individuality, and says it serves all hair types and all walks of life. Its stated values are acceptance, creativity, communication and dedication. Alison hopes the space grows into a community hub for creativity, learning and individuality, and the salon hosts hands-on and look-and-learn education and stylist events for coloring, cutting and styling. The salon describes its prices as affordable, though they vary by stylist, hair length, texture, thickness and the result you want.

A first visit usually starts with a consultation, which is free and can be done virtually or in person; the salon recommends one for new guests. Haircuts and color services include a blow-dry and style. You can book online by service or by stylist. Salon-employed stylists can be booked through the salon or the online booking service, while renters are self-employed and handle their own booking and pricing. A card on file is required. Cancellations need 24 hours notice; later cancellations carry a fee of 25% of the scheduled services, no-shows are charged 50%, and arriving more than 10 minutes late is treated as a cancellation. Products are currently pick-up in salon only, and unopened items can be returned within 30 days. Gift cards can be bought in salon.
