Cala Renee Salon started as a small family salon on Cabot Street and has grown over more than 35 years. It opened in Beverly in 1989 and has been part of the town's hair scene since. Curly hair work began in the 1990s, and by 2005 the salon had taken on a Curly Girls identity. Its mission statement describes its work as changing lives one curl at a time.

The team travels together to Premiere Hair Shows in New York and Orlando and to specialized curly hair training, and it hosts in-salon training on curly cutting and coloring techniques. The salon says all of its stylists are trained and specialize in curly hair, and that the salon and its staff have been recognized as Curly Hair Specialists on DevaCurl, Google and Yelp.

A Curl by Curl cut is done dry. Each curl is shaped in its natural state to suit the client's texture and daily routine, and the appointment, which runs about one to one and a half hours, includes a curl coaching session and a personalized product recommendation. Clients also learn how to understand and care for their curls at home. Boot Camp for Curls is customized to each client and combines a cleanse, conditioning, and coaching and styling for everyday care. The First Time Visit Bundle at $200 covers the Curl by Curl cut, cleanse, deep conditioning, a detox or scalp scrub, and styling.

Pricing is confirmed after the stylist evaluates the requested service, so quoted prices may change. Chemical service prices do not include styling or dry time, and fashion color is priced after a consultation. Appointments can be booked online and gift cards are sold on the website. Cancellations need at least 48 hours notice and changes need 24 hours. Last-minute cancellations are charged 50 percent of the service, and missed appointments with no notice are charged the full amount. Checks, credit cards and cash are accepted, a card can be kept on file for contactless checkout, and gratuities are taken in cash or by personal check only.

Each October the salon turns pink to raise money and awareness for breast cancer, and each March it supports multiple sclerosis awareness and research.

Cuts curly hair dry, shaping each curl in its natural state, and teaches clients to care for their curls at home.
