About

Brighton Institute of Cosmetology has provided cosmetology education since 1965. It merged with New Midwest Beauty College in 1998 and has been owned by William J. Arbour since 2016.

The school offers full-time programs in cosmetology (1,500 clock hours, about 52 weeks), esthetics (750 hours, about 26 weeks) and manicuring (600 hours, about 20 weeks). Cosmetology covers cutting, coloring, styling, skin and nail care, and state board exam preparation. Esthetics covers hair removal, lash extensions, makeup, facials, microdermabrasion, brow lamination, lifts and tints, specialty facials and light therapy, and includes a 2-day lash course. Manicuring covers nail anatomy, sanitation, nail enhancements, professional ethics and client communication. The school states it has a 100% pass rate on state board examinations and that it meets all state curriculum requirements for each program.

Two instructor tracks are available for licensed cosmetologists: a 600-hour Cosmetology Instructor course and a 300-hour Limited Instructor course. Both include classroom observation and clinic teaching under a licensed educator, and both are full-time only.

The student-run salon is open to walk-in clients only, with no appointments taken. Services are performed by supervised senior students, so availability depends on timing and student schedules. Chemical services, pedicures, manicures and facials must be started before 2 p.m. Hair services include cuts, blow-dries, treatments, braids and up-dos, and color services include all-over color, foils, balayage, toners and bleach. Nail services range from basic manicures and pedicures to gel and acrylic work and nail art, and esthetic services include facials, waxing, lash and brow services, makeup and ear piercing.

Enrollment begins with a pre-enrollment application, followed by an in-person appointment of about 30 to 45 minutes. Students need photo identification, a Social Security card, a high school diploma or equivalent, and the down payment for their program. Financial aid is available for the cosmetology, esthetics and manicuring programs and the 600-hour instructor course. The school accepts Pell Grants, Direct Loans and Parent PLUS, and it does not offer in-house scholarships but lists outside scholarship sites instead.

Training-focused: students learn state-required skills and practice on real clients in a student-run salon under supervision.
