Beauology is a salon on Mowry Avenue in Fremont covering hair, skin, waxing, threading, makeup and men's grooming under one roof. The salon says customer service is a top priority. Clients can call or text (510) 794-4526, and appointments and consultations can be booked online. Gift cards are sold. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it is closed on Mondays.

The hair menu centers on Aveda hair color, which the salon describes as 93 percent naturally derived and vegan. Stylists receive foundational cutting and coloring education through Sassoon Academy. Since March 2014 the salon has used one price level for hair services, with no separate pricing for associate or senior stylists. The salon says this supports a team approach and that junior stylists produce work of the same quality. A full-service haircut includes a shampoo, scalp massage, cut and style, and a trim without washing and styling is not offered. Long or very dense hair can carry an extra charge. A color touch-up covers about an inch of roots, while full color covers the whole length. Partial highlights include up to eight panels, and anything beyond that is priced as full highlights. Hair gloss adds semi-permanent color and shine for about three to four weeks. Brazilian Blowout is not offered because of the salon's concerns about formaldehyde in the products used.

Facials run 45 to 60 minutes for women and men alike and include cleansing, steam, exfoliation, extractions, facial massage, a mask, and a finish of toner, moisturizer and sunscreen. Products come from Image Skincare, including its anti-aging and Ormedic lines. The salon's Shahnaz facials, the Indian facials on the menu, are popular with the Indian community in the Bay Area, according to the salon. The salon suggests a facial every four to six weeks to keep skin clear and hydrated. Waxing uses Satin Smooth Ultra Sensitive Wax. For facial hair the salon prefers threading, which it describes as less irritating than waxing. Men's waxing is priced higher than women's because men's hair is coarser, and men's Brazilian and bikini waxing are not offered.

Beauology runs a state-approved cosmetology apprenticeship, a two-year earn-while-you-learn program that leads to a cosmetologist license. Apprentices must be at least 16, have completed 10th grade or its equivalent, and hold a valid SSN or TIN and a government photo ID. The commitment is 32 or more hours a week, a six-hour theory class every Tuesday, 222 hours of unpaid supplemental instruction and 3,200 hours of paid on-the-job training. Apprentices are paid at least minimum wage. The program is free apart from textbook, apprentice license application and final licensing exam application fees. For people unsure whether cosmetology suits them, the Intro to Salon class is a 90-minute one-on-one session that begins with shampoo and blow dry, and a model can be brought along. A threading class for beginners and professionals is offered for $84.

Bridal hair and makeup are offered in the salon only, not on location, and the salon also serves Indian brides. Bridal services can be booked outside regular business hours, and extra charges may apply for those hours. A non-refundable advance payment may be required for bridal services, especially outside regular hours or when a significant amount of staff time is reserved.
