Alter Ego Hair Design is located at 381 N. York Street, Suite 14, in downtown Elmhurst, just north of North Avenue. The salon describes its location as upscale and its facility as state-of-the-art.

Co-owners Caitlin Curiale and Erin Kelly Haines came from large corporate salons and wanted to create a calmer place to work. Their most recent workplace together was Salon Hype in LaGrange, and between them they have more than 30 years of combined experience. The salon says each client receives one-on-one attention.

Each visit begins with a consultation to learn which features suit the client best and how to highlight them. For hair extensions, the consultation looks at lifestyle, habits, needs, and scalp and hair health, and the price is quoted at that visit. The consultation is complimentary. The salon offers several extension methods and several grades of human hair to suit different hair types and budgets, and it describes its extension methods as the safest on the market.

Color is priced a la carte. Corrective color and hair extensions are quoted at consultation. Listed prices are starting prices and can change with hair length, thickness or texture.

Each service starts with a consultation to find the client's best features, and stylists show clients how to recreate the look at home using their own styling products. The salon says it commits to ongoing, advanced education so its advice stays current.

The salon is private and relaxed, and the owners say it feels more like a retreat than a busy salon.
