About
Van Council co-founded Van Michael in 1984 with his brother Michael. Before opening it, he spent nine years working in several salons. He trained at cosmetology school starting in 1975.
He aimed to create the most advanced training curriculum in the country, with education as the foundation of the salon. He holds the title Aveda Global Master, and he still teaches, speaks, and influences the beauty industry.
He has received a long list of honors. These include the North American Hairdresser of the Year award, the NAHA Avant Garde Stylist of the Year award, the NAHA Makeover Stylist of the Year award (twice), and recognition as a Top 20 Salon Owner in the country. Other honors are the Salon Today Top 75 Educators of the Century recognition, the Modern Salon Lifetime Achievement Award, the Aveda Corporation Lifetime Achievement Award, the Art and Fashion Group World Masters Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Intercoiffure Jerry Gordon Salon Business Leadership Award. He also received the River Guardian award in 2018 for leadership.
