About
Kenneth S. Schwartz, M.D., works as a cataract and glaucoma surgeon at Washington Eye Physicians & Surgeons. He focuses on refractive cataract surgery and on complex glaucoma surgery, including tube shunt procedures, and he also treats patients who have cataracts and glaucoma at the same time. Most of his patients are referred to him by other doctors. Within glaucoma, his areas include diagnosis and management and the use of shunts and drainage devices.
His training began with a medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, preceded by a cum laude bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and post-baccalaureate studies at New York University. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital and an ophthalmology residency at Washington Hospital Center, where he served as chief resident. He finished with a glaucoma subspecialty fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Medical Association.
He has taught doctors in training at Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center as a senior attending surgical instructor since 2003, and he serves as physician advisor to the Glaucoma Review Board at both institutions. He also sits on the Practicing Ophthalmologist's Curriculum Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He lectures on cataract and glaucoma surgery and eye diseases, co-authored a chapter in Duane's Textbook of Ophthalmology, and has peer-reviewed publications on medical and surgical management of glaucoma and on diagnostic imaging after glaucoma surgery. Mission work in Peru and Ghana involved training physicians and treating complex cases. He received the Helane G. Joseph Dessoff Award in Ophthalmology from Washington Hospital Center and first place in the Resident's Day Research Award. He is listed among Washingtonian Magazine's Top Doctors and in the National Guide of America's Top Ophthalmologists and the Washington DC-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Doctors Guide.
