Juan Ortiz

A double board-certified plastic surgeon at North Raleigh Plastic Surgery, he has nearly 20 years of experience. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico and received his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed a general surgery internship and five-year residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, then a plastic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and a burn fellowship at its Firefighters Regional Burn Center.

His Army career included a staff general surgeon post at Fort Hood, Texas, and service as Chief of Surgery at a combat support hospital in Afghanistan. He later led surgery and plastic surgery at Womack Army Medical Center and retired from the Army in 2017. Earlier in his career, he directed breast reconstruction surgery services at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital. Teaching appointments have included Methodist University's physician assistant program and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. He now serves as a case reviewer for the North Carolina Medical Board.

His practice centers on complex breast surgery, including revision and anatomically difficult cases, along with breast, body and specialized procedures. He regularly performs forehead and lip reduction, using a nerve-preserving forehead technique intended to keep scalp sensation. Rhinoplasty is a core focus, including ethnic rhinoplasty that keeps each patient's natural features and proportions. He has performed more than 1,500 breast procedures, over 1,000 tummy tucks, more than 500 labiaplasties, more than 200 forehead reductions, more than 150 rhinoplasties, more than 150 lip reductions and more than 100 otoplasties. Few surgeons regularly perform forehead and lip reduction, and he is among them. He routinely sees breast augmentation patients from Durham, Greensboro, Cary and the wider Triangle, and he has a particular clinical interest in tummy tucks, Mommy Makeovers and plastic surgery for men.

He belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the North Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He has published scientific articles and taken part in research studies. Colleagues recognize him nationally and internationally.
