About
Dr. Rankin is a board-certified plastic surgeon who holds an MD and the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons designation. He sees patients at the Tiburon office and serves Marin County and the wider San Francisco Bay Area. His focus is facelift and facial rejuvenation surgery, rhinoplasty and mommy makeovers. He is a facial aging expert, is award-winning and five-star rated, and holds the Charles L. Witte Award for surgical excellence and the Highest In-service Examination Award on the plastic surgery in-service exam. Patient reviews praise his bedside manner and the staff. His training began with a biology degree from Chapman University and work as an EMT on a critical care ambulance. He went on to an MD at Ross University School of Medicine, which he completed summa cum laude, and spent much of his clinical training in Chicago's Cook County hospital system. A general surgery residency at the University of Arizona followed, where he was Chief Resident at Banner University Medical Center and earned a master's degree in surgical research. He then did a research fellowship with Dr. David G. Armstrong and plastic surgery training at Vanderbilt University under Dr. R. Bruce Shack. Further training under G. Patrick Maxwell covered breast surgery, body contouring and facial aesthetic surgery, and he also trained in facial aesthetic surgery with Dr. Timothy J. Marten, Dr. Dino Elyassnia and Dr. Ronald P. Gruber.
He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and takes part in continuous certification. He also holds Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications and holds medical licenses in California, Tennessee and Arizona. Earlier, he did research at the University of California San Francisco in its Dynamic Neuroimaging lab, and he taught medical students at Northwestern University. He has written peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on surgical safety, surgical technology and 3D printing for surgical applications, and he has served as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Palliative Medicine, the British Journal of Radiology and the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He has also worked with the cleft team at Vanderbilt University and published on congenital anomalies.
