Rose Chard founded Your Body Needs. The business began by bringing essential oils into massage sessions and hand-blending massage oils on plant oil bases. Over time it grew into a spa with massage, facials, waxing, LED light therapy and a salt room, all in one studio in Annapolis.

Visits begin with a conversation. Therapists listen before each session and adjust the treatment to what the client needs that day, looking past the surface to understand tension, stress and skin concerns. Staff keep track of clients' names, preferences and stories between visits. Clients undress to their own comfort level and are draped except for the area being worked on. Couples massages take place in a private room with ambient lighting and soothing sounds, and couples and 90-minute massages are booked by contacting the studio directly.

The studio also has a Restorative Salt Room, with a wall of about 2,000 pounds of mineral-rich Himalayan salt deposits. The business says the salt room's ions support the nervous system and that its salinized air can support lung and breathing health. A salt room session can be added to a single or couples massage, or the room can be booked privately by the hour. The Japanese Scalp Massage Treatment, performed by trained estheticians, combines hot oil and steam, exfoliation, an herbal tea rinse, scalp and neck massage and hydrotherapy in the salt room. Clients with sensitive skin or scalp are asked to say so before booking so the treatment can be adjusted.

Aromatherapy is central to the business. Its aromatherapy line includes cleansers, eye serums, hydrosols, face oils, body care, essential oils, synergy blends, carrier oils and diffusers, and the staff hand-blend the products used in treatments. The business describes aromatherapy as a complementary practice meant to accompany traditional health care, not replace it, and says it does not promise results its products cannot deliver. Massage packages are sold at a discount, remain on the client's account until used, and must be redeemed within one year of purchase.

A holistic, aromatherapy-led practice that tailors each session to the client's needs that day, using natural, hand-blended oils and presenting aromatherapy as a complement to traditional health care.
