Velvet Faces is Lydia Martin's passion project, built in collaboration with artists who share her approach to beauty. The Loc Cultivation Academy is the main draw. Classes run online and in person and are open to all skill levels. The course lineup is Loc Cultivation 101 (Foundation is Key) at $750, Micro Locs 101 at $750, Levels 1-3 at $1,125, and a Full Course covering Levels 1-4 at $1,500.
Artists also travel for events, both domestically and internationally, with a focus on DC, Maryland, Virginia, New York and New Jersey. The shop sells loc and hair care products and a glow oil line, plus global finds such as jewelry, bags, apparel and accessories from Brazil, Bali, Thailand, Morocco and Colombia. Baltimore customers can pick up shop items in the salon at checkout and skip shipping.
Teaching is built into the business, with loc care taught through graded courses, and the artistry is aimed at each client.
