The Memphis Skin Academy

The Memphis Skin Academy was originally founded in 2017 as a school focused on aesthetics and has since grown to offer cosmetology and eyelash training as well. The school says it has graduated more than 300 students since opening. It is owned and led by Melanie Mull Saulsbury, a licensed cosmetology educator since 2009 who previously taught for more than ten years at local cosmetology schools.

The school's training pairs classroom theory with practical work in a salon or spa setting, alongside a licensed beauty professional, instead of all-day instruction on site. Instruction is described as hands-on, with small class sizes and a curriculum aimed at getting students into a career.

The academy offers four tracks. The Cosmetology program is 1,500 hours and covers hair theory, hairstyling, haircutting, haircoloring, braiding and natural hair care, along with basic aesthetic and nail studies. The Aesthetic program is 750 hours and covers facials, microdermabrasion, exfoliation, chemical peels, skincare, full body waxing and makeup, with advanced aesthetic studies included. The 300-hour Eyelash Specialty program covers infection control, eyelash extension application and technique, eye conditions, isolation methods, extension removal and lash styling. A Master Educator training program is also listed, though the site gives no hours or further details.

The academy says it was the first school in Tennessee to offer a dedicated eyelash extension program. Its founder also worked with a state representative on legislation requiring licensure for eyelash extension professionals in Tennessee. The state passed that bill in 2023, requiring eyelash extension work to be done by license holders who completed a 300-hour Eyelash Specialty program. Under Tennessee rules, lash extension services in a salon or spa require a cosmetology, aesthetics or Eyelash Specialty license.

Tuition is $15,000 for Cosmetology, $7,500 for Aesthetics and $3,500 for Eyelash Specialty, plus a $1,600 enrollment fee for the Cosmetology class. A monthly tuition payment plan is available. The school does not offer financial aid, and it states that its prices are discounted below market rate and that it offers affordable repayment plans.
