The business began as a traveling event hair and makeup company. Rexstyles Salon opened in 2020, and the brand has since expanded into a salon, a spa called The Spell, and an accessories shop called Rexstyles Corner that sells curated pieces. The brand has also hosted client retreats, including one in Salem.

The Layer focuses on color and cutting. Services range from balayage and highlights to all-over and dimensional color, vivid shades, glazes, bleaching and precision foiling, with color design and corrective color priced according to the service needed. Extensions are offered as tape-ins with I-tips or as hand-tied wefts, and the salon also offers curly cuts, blowouts, braiding and updos. The salon uses Redken color, and R+Co and IGK products are used in the salon and sold there.

The Spell has a bohemian mood. Its menu covers facials tailored to each client, contouring and firming work, intensive moisture treatments, body exfoliants and full-body wellness sessions. Three membership tiers include a monthly facial, savings on add-ons or retail products, and first access to appointments.

The salon says it has earned recognition for its design. Consultations are offered at no charge and take 45 minutes. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before an appointment are charged 50% of the services, and no-shows are charged the full service price. Offsite styling or makeup bookings cancelled after booking carry a flat $50 fee, and wedding contracts are not included. Buy Now, Pay Later is available for in-person bookings from $50 to $4,000, subject to approval before the appointment.
