The Grateful Dread is a loctician and braiding salon in Suite 110 at 2953 Highway K in O'Fallon, Missouri. Dreadlocks are the core of the menu, covering starter locs, interlocking, retwists and retie appointments, crochet locs, and synthetic or wool dreadlock sets. Braiding is also offered, including box, knotless, boho, Viking, festival, cornrows, microbraids, twists and crochet braids.
Braid appointments are priced at $95 for the first hour and $85 for each hour after, and hair is not included. Clients who cannot supply their own hair should talk with Claire before booking. Crochet locs come in several forms: removal at $100 per hour, an install without extensions starting at $185 for at least two hours, and an install with extensions starting at $145, which requires existing locs or a booked crochet install. Handmade extensions are made to order at $100 to $250 depending on length and are not part of the install price. Maintenance is booked in one- to three-hour blocks and cannot be combined with a wash and dry only visit.
A dreadlock detox takes 1.5 hours and costs $60. It uses apple cider vinegar, baking soda and tea tree oil and includes a wash and dry. Hair de-matting is $100 per hour and is done gently to limit damage and hair loss, without judgment about how the matting happened. A wash and dry alone takes 30 minutes for $50. Dreadlock style alone is $50 for up to 30 minutes and $40 per hour after. Retwists and retwist-and-style visits, at $100 for the first hour and $90 for each hour after, apply to non-crochet locs and need hair washed and dried or a detox booked for the same visit, with a $20 styling fee for style work.
Starter locs are $285 and take about 3.5 hours. A virtual or in-person consultation is required beforehand, arranged by text. Interlocking is $150 and takes 30 minutes. Custom synthetic or wool dreadlock sets need 7 to 10 days to be made before booking, and clients may bring locs from another vendor. Braid-in installs start at $100 and do not include the synthetic locs; removal is $50 for up to an hour and $40 per hour after. The salon does not offer punk or wick services. Late arrivals are charged $15 to $45, and additional hours are $85 each.
The salon sells its own haircare line, including shampoo at $20, an ACV rinse at $15, lip balm at $3 and dread hair ties at $3. Handmade dread beads are $30, hair for dreadlocks is $120, and wire headbands are $10.
The salon takes a gentle approach to de-matting, aimed at limiting damage and hair loss, and offers it without judgment about how the matting occurred. Its services are built around dreadlock care, from starting locs to ongoing maintenance.
