The Foot & Hand Spa sits within The Foot & Ankle Center on the Johnston-Willis hospital campus in Richmond. The salon describes itself as the first medical-grade nail salon in Richmond. It was founded to offer hand and foot care with a lower risk of infection than typical nail salons. Dr. Mitchell R. Waskin, a podiatrist, opened the spa and serves as its Medical Director onsite.
Services range from standard manicures and pedicures to specialty pedicures designed for clients with medical needs, including diabetes, arthritis, total joint replacement and chemotherapy. Clients are seen under the supervision of podiatrists, who oversee care for anyone with foot problems or health issues that affect the feet. Keryflex nail restoration covers fungal toenails with a flexible protective coating that lasts up to eight weeks and can be polished as normal. Keryflex can be applied right after a laser treatment for nail fungus at the Center, but laser treatment is not recommended while Keryflex nails are in place.
Hygiene is built into the routine. Metal instruments are scrubbed, soaked in a disinfecting solution, sealed in individual pouches and steam sterilized in an autoclave. Emery boards and buffers are new for each client and are never reused, and clients may take home the files and buffers used on them. Technicians push cuticles back rather than cutting them, using an orangewood stick when medically needed. Pedicure chairs are wiped down with disinfectant before each service, and the jetless basins are filled with water and disinfecting solution for about ten minutes after each pedicure.
Prices start at $10 for add-ons such as French Polish, with an Essential Manicure at $40 and an Essential Pedicure at $58. Because the salon is small, clients booking several services or a group are asked to plan ahead. Late arrivals get a 15-minute grace period, and repeated lateness leads to a charge of half the service and a rebooking. Cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice, while group and Keryflex appointments need 72 hours' notice and a 25% deposit. Appointments are held with a card on file or a purchased gift card.
Founded to lower the infection risk of hand and foot care compared with typical nail salons, with technicians working under podiatrist supervision and clinical oversight from the on-site medical team.
