About

The Current is an electrolysis studio on NE Hancock Street in Portland. It describes itself as LGBTQ+ friendly and is open Tuesday through Thursday, from noon to 7pm.

The studio was opened in 2025 by owner Hazel Holder, a Licensed Electrologist (L.E.). Hazel wants people with unwanted hair to have easier access to electrolysis, and the studio is built around that goal.

Treatments are delivered through three methods: flash, blend and thermolysis. Flash is a rapid version of thermolysis that delivers high-intensity heat in less than half a second. Blend pairs direct current with alternating current. Clients can have hair removed from facial areas such as the upper lip, cheeks and chin, and from the neck, chest, arms, stomach, back, bikini line, legs and toes. The studio does not work inside the nose or ears. Hair growing on a mole can only be treated with a doctor's note. Skin that is sunburned cannot be treated.

The studio recommends visits no more than six weeks apart. With consistent treatment, most areas can be cleared within 18 to 24 months. Before an appointment, hair should be 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. Clients should stop tweezing or waxing at least four weeks ahead and avoid shaving for at least three days before.

The studio is in network with OHP PacificSource, which requires a referral from the client's doctor. Clients without OHP PacificSource pay in full at the time of service. A superbill is available on request for submitting to an insurer. The studio says electrolysis as gender-affirming care may be covered by medical insurance, citing Oregon House Bill 2002, and plans to contract with other insurers in the future. New clients may be placed on a waitlist, while existing clients can book online.

Aims to make electrolysis easier to access for people who have unwanted hair.
