The Clean Beauty Lab opened in 2005. It was founded by Mauricio Artunduaga and Malvin Almanzar, and Mauricio began looking into alternative ingredients after seeing clients react to salon color. In 2020 the salon started developing its own at-home hair care line, the Apothecary range, with an Australian botanist. The products are vegan and cruelty-free, and the salon sells them alongside its tools, including the CBL Signature Paddle Brush and The Ritual Bundle.

About

Every service starts with a complimentary consultation, held in person or virtually. The consultation looks at the scalp, head shape, facial structure, hair texture, hair health and what the client wants, and it leads to a plan. A complimentary patch test is recommended before any new color service. Shampoos are done in massage recliner chairs with aromatherapy cleansing. Color corrections, double process color and tape-in extensions are arranged by consultation, and the salon's keratin treatment price is confirmed at that consultation. Listed prices are starting points and can vary by hair length, density and the experience level of the stylist a client requests. Blow dries are not included with color services unless specified, but can be added. Cancellations need 48 hours' notice for regular services. Gift cards are available.

Color is done with what the salon calls Clean Color Technology. Its color formulas are free of ammonia, PPDs, resorcinol, parabens, sulfates and synthetic fragrance, and use no peroxide. The salon says its color offers 100% gray coverage that does not fade, and that its formulas suit sensitive skin and pregnancy. Hair treatments are formaldehyde-free.

The salon is open Tuesday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is closed Sunday and Monday. You can call 212.532.3030 or email hello@thecleanbeautylab.com.

Plant-based, non-toxic products are used across the salon's services, and each service starts with a consultation that plans the work around the individual's hair and goals.
