The Burrow

The studio was founded by Lorraine (Rain) to give artists autonomy over their own workspace, with a collaborative atmosphere and an emphasis on community. Each artist owns and operates their own business, rents a chair in the studio, and handles their own bookings, payments and client concerns.

Visits are by appointment only, and walk-ins are not accepted. Appointments are made directly with the artist rather than through the main line, and changes or cancellations go through the artist too. The main number reaches the owner, with no receptionist, and voicemails may go unanswered; a missed appointment may be charged. On arrival, clients check in on the iPad at the refreshment bar, which alerts their stylist, who then comes to the waiting area. Complimentary drinks and snacks are offered there. Free on-street parking is available, and visitors are asked not to park in neighboring businesses' driveways.

The online shop carries styling products, hair masks, shampoo and conditioner, and curl and texture products from brands including IGK, Authentic Beauty Concept, Moroccanoil, Color Wow and Curl Wow. Listed prices include $45.00 for the Color Wow Money Masque and $28.00 for the Authentic Beauty Concept Amplify Mousse.

According to local legend, the building dates to the early 1830s, when Dr. Erastus F. Cooke ran an apothecary and drug store there. Dr. Cooke moved to Wethersfield from Oppenheim, New York, to be near his wife's family, and reportedly created a hair pomade that sold out at his shop. He was also one of the founding members of Eagle Laboratory Inc., a chemical producer.
