Survivor Gals was founded by Jennifer Grunwald and Kathy Johnson, who worked together for three years at a wig and mastectomy boutique before opening their own business. Since 2005 the business has helped cancer survivors and people with alopecia find wigs and mastectomy products that suit them.
The business describes itself as owned, operated and staffed by women, and says its owners are cancer survivors themselves.
Visits are by appointment. The fitting rooms are large and private, with space for a friend or family member to join. The Fort Worth location has two private wig fitting rooms and a private mastectomy fitting room, and the Plano location is open on weekdays with extended hours available by appointment.
The product range covers mastectomy bras, prostheses and camisoles for immediately after surgery and for later use, along with a custom breast prosthesis made by American Breast Care. Wigs and hair alternatives include human hair options, and wigs can be altered by trained staff for a better fit. Skin care made for people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation is also stocked, as are compression garments for lymphedema and vein disorders, including a compression bra.
The business also handles insurance paperwork: it checks a client's benefits, files claims, and helps out-of-network clients file their own. It accepts a number of insurers, including Medicare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana and United Healthcare, and says it expects to join most major networks. It takes part in Locks of Love and participates in community events such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It also keeps a blog with information and upcoming events.
The business says it is run by women and by cancer survivors, and it centers its work on private fitting and help with insurance paperwork.
Bright and sunny, with large private rooms.
