The business grew out of a home spa party the owners threw for their oldest daughter's fifth birthday. The family had not been able to find a kids spa and salon in their area, so they set out to create one. Their four children, two boys and two girls, gave feedback that helped shape how the business is set up.

The shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and closed on Wednesday and Sunday. Spa services are for children ages 2 to 16. Children need to be comfortable sitting through their whole service without a parent's help, and if a child cannot, the service ends. Parents wait in the waiting area during appointments. Appointments are held for 10 minutes, and a late fee of 25% of the appointment value applies after that. A card must be kept on file for spa and salon bookings, and the card is charged only for no-shows or cancellations made within 24 hours.

The spa menu covers nail care, facials and temporary tattoos. A Basic Mani at $12 includes cleaning, filing and one polish choice, while a Spa Mani at $18 adds a dessert-themed soak, scrub and lotion massage with two polish choices. Pedicures follow the same pattern, with a Basic Pedi at $15 and a Spa Pedi at $21. Kid-friendly gel polish can be added to any manicure or pedicure for $5. A facial is $12, and the Shimmer & Shine Eye Kandy application at $6 includes eye kandy, cheek dusting and a lip treat. Nail art starts at $3 per nail, and nail toppings are $1 per nail.

Hair services are provided by independent stylists at SugarPlum Kids Natural Hair Studio, and the menu includes picture-ready haircuts, shampoos, updos, styling and kid-friendly hair treatments. Prices can vary by stylist, and cancellations, rescheduling and questions for those stylists go directly to them rather than the main phone line. Natural Hair Studio guests receive one complimentary snack, only one parent may attend, and additional guests are not permitted.

Birthday parties are a major part of the business. Party packages are booked by phone and accommodate up to 8 kids at the base price, with room for up to 12 guests in total. Each package includes a two-hour session with staff, decorations, personalized emailed invitations, games, a light snack, dessert, favor bags and costumes. A 50% deposit is due at booking and is non-refundable, and the balance is due on the party day. Parties may bring in cake, cupcakes or a cookie cake, but no other outside food or beverages. Taxes apply to packages.

Every service is designed for children and carries a dessert theme, and the owners' own children helped shape how the business runs.
