Styles 4 Kidz
Hair salon in Oak Park, IL
Styles 4 Kidz is a nonprofit recognized as a 501(c)(3). Its work aims to give children self-assurance, pride in their culture and a sound sense of who they are, using hair care teaching and assistance. Tamekia Swint, MBA, founded the organization and serves as its executive director. Its programs serve transracial adoptive, foster, kinship, biracial and multiracial families. According to the organization, since 2010 it has served 5,225 children, supported 455 families, held 210 educational workshops and provided 4,071 hair care services. The board includes leaders in healthcare, finance, education, law, entrepreneurship and nonprofit leadership. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and is closed Sundays and Mondays. Visits are by appointment only, and services are designed to be kid-friendly. Stylists provide haircuts, shampoo and detangling, flat iron styling, and protective styles including braids, cornrows, twists, locs, crochet sew-ins and extensions. Some clients may qualify for a scholarship, subject to available funds, by submitting a request form. For parents, the organization runs a five-level hair care workshop series, with each level priced at $75. Level 1 is a presentation covering basic care, textures, skincare, protective styles and an introduction to Dutch braiding. Levels 2 through 5 are hands-on, and several are offered both virtually and in person. The levels build in sequence: Level 2 requires Level 1, Level 3 requires Level 2, and Level 4 requires Levels 1 through 3. A separate two-hour class teaches moisturizing, styling and maintaining textured hair for pre-teens and teens aged 12 and up. Teen students should arrive with clean hair that is out of protective styles, as the instructor does not prep or style hair. Beyond the salon and classrooms, the organization offers an online training platform on a monthly subscription, with content updated annually, and a podcast on Black culture, transracial adoption and foster care. Parent Advocacy Groups bring parents and children together for advocacy, cultural learning and conversation. Sponsor-a-Kid covers hair care for youth in foster care or families facing financial hardship, and free hair care is provided to children in group home foster care. Donations may be made by check, by Zelle, through employer matching, or as in-kind gifts of hair products, extensions, tools, beads, barrettes and hair bows. Crown Circle Partner and Impact Partner giving options are also available.
