About

Nick and Barbara Zeppos opened Studio 890 in 1979 in Elm Grove. It began in a space of about 1,000 square feet with two full-time designers and one part-time designer, and it doubled in size within its first year. In the early years Barbara also offered skin care, makeup, nail services and body massage. The salon says it was once known as the fashion arena of the west side of town.

In early 1981 Nick started a distributorship for Sebastian of Milwaukee, which brought Sebastian products to salons across Wisconsin. The owners sold that business in 1986 so they could concentrate on the salons. The salon says many of its staff have worked there for ten to thirty years.

The salon runs a staff training program that its founders developed and that has been updated over time. Team members are trained in fashion, communication and technical skills, and the salon says it aims to give everyone who trains with it a strong education in the industry. The salon has been named a Goldwell Titanium Salon.

A haircut at Studio 890 begins with a one-on-one consultation with the stylist, followed by a shampoo and conditioning, the cut, and a style finish. Consultations are free. Clients are asked to check in five minutes before their appointment and to give 24 hours' notice to cancel. Parking is available, and beverages are offered. Children under 10 may come in only when they are having a service and must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Online booking is for existing clients; new clients must call the salon to book a first appointment.

The team works to keep sharpening its skills and learning new techniques, supported by a training program the founders built and keep updating.
